Associate Professor Ari Seligmann (PhD) is a critic, historian and designer engaged in studies of contemporary architecture and urbanism, Japanese architecture, and relations between architecture and media.
He is currently Head of Department (Architecture), Bachelor Program Coordinator and History/Theory stream coordinator developing our integrated operative history program. His current research examines Japanese architecture, architectural photography, and architectural education. He is a regular contributor to the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia and New Zealand with a suite of studies of the discursive construction of Japanese architecture. His Japanese Modern Architecture 1920-2015, Developments and Dialogues (2016) is one of the first English language surveys of modern Japanese architecture produced in almost 30 years. Ongoing research includes documenting and analysing the evolution of the Kumamoto Artpolis Program (1988-present), which is the longest running public architecture program in the world and a litmus of the development of contemporary Japanese architecture. He has published in prominent journals such as Architecture and Culture, Architectural Theory Review, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians and the Journal of Architectural Education.
Japanese Modern Architecture 1920-2015: Developments and Dialogues
Published in 2016, Japanese Modern Architecture 1920-2015 uses a series of thematic lenses to explain the rich history of Japanese architectural developments from the 1920s foundation of modern architecture to contemporary permutations of modern and post-modern architecture.
The book introduces the diversity of Japanese architecture and traces the evolution of Japanese architecture in the context of domestic and international developments. It examines the relationship between architecture and nature, and explores various approaches to craft and material. Finally, this new book considers tensions between refinement and ostentation in architectural expression.

Ryoji Suzuki Material Experiences
The first comprehensive assemblage of Suzuki's work outside of Japan, explicated and expanded experience of Suzuki’s material. The exhibition coordinated analyses of the evolution of key design strategies informing investigations, of the orchestration of elements forming a distinctive lexicon in his work, of the details and sequences developed to create architectural experiences and of the diverse multimedia repertoires of representation employed in his explorations.
Challenging default assumptions, this exhibition interrogated underlying issues and forms of mixing to develop robust approaches to shaping the built environment. The exhibition spatialised a matrix of mixing strategies illuminating a range of potential approaches.
Pointing Forward collected the outcomes of a creative consortium mobilised to speculate on future possibilities for (sub)urban Melbourne. One-kilometer radius nodes located around the future train stations of the proposed Rowville Metro line (forthcoming circa 2046) provided a fertile context for developing powerful images, strategic urban approaches and stimulating design interventions.
