Prato is a vibrant Tuscan town located twenty kilometres northwest of Florence. The Monash University Prato Centre can be found in an 18th century palazzo in the historical heart of the city.

The cultural experience of living, studying and creating in a medieval city is a big part of all faculty studies in Prato. Exquisite palaces, awe-inspiring churches and winding cobbled streets create a living museum that brings history, art, design and architecture alive and makes it part of daily life.

Studying in Prato also gives you access to some of the world’s greatest collections of art and design work and a city with a rich architectural history. As well as being close to Tuscany’s renowned art galleries, Prato is home to the Centre for Contemporary Art Luigi Pecci – the leading contemporary art museum in central Italy.

Prato is also within striking distance of the world’s premier art event, the Venice Biennale, and the Architecture Biennale, while Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Lucca and Pisa are close by. Students have exposure to the great artworks in the Uffizi Gallery, the Academia and Renaissance frescoes by Piero della Francesca, in Arezzo. Prato also provides a jumping off point to experience European architectural heritage and leading contemporary designs.

Better kept secrets – like the Museum of Sinopie at Pisa where artists’ preparatory drawings can be studied, and the gothic carvings at the Church of Sant’Andrea in Pistoia – are also at your fingertips.

You’ll be good hands, as our faculty lecturers teach the Prato programs, and you can apply for subsidies to help you study overseas as part of your degree.

Studying in Prato is an invaluable opportunity for you to develop academically, professionally and personally. So be inspired and enrich your learning with the Prato experience.

The Prato program offered at Monash University was an unforgettable experience and will remain a major highlight in my university career.

The well structured program provided me with useful resources and experiences, yet also allowing room for exploration, experimentation and adventure. I was encouraged to research and think critically in order to develop a creative response to the visual language of the area, a skill which I have adapted into my current design practice.
