This studio-based research project considers the garden as a highly complex cultural artefact. The focus of the research is on domestic and productive food gardens as sites that engage personal, historical, cultural, ideological and environmental contexts. The creative works aim to conjure layered, associative readings of the garden as an idea, a place, and an action. The artistic gestures are devised and / or responsive to the sites, their histories and their use. The research investigates how artistic interventions in specific sites can reveal and comment on the garden as a manifestation of a cultural moment.
This exhibition comprises the practical component of Sally Mannall’s PhD research.
Congratulations to PhD candidate Sally Mannall on the success of her exhibition The Polysemic Garden at MADA Gallery.
