The Darkest Puzzle was an Alternate Reality Game created by Hugh Davies that took place in late September 2011. The plot unfolded around a group of gamers seeking to uncover the 9/11 culprits through gamification; the application of game mechanics to real world problems. Collapsing together the subjects of global politics and terrorism, real-world problem solving and play, The Darkest Puzzle was a controversial and unpredictable experience; one that was not intended to be easy or enjoyable. Ultimately, the players abandoned the game, with the puzzle still incomplete.
This exhibition represents a complete unveiling of the games narrative arc, puzzle architecture and conclusion, and features previously undiscovered artifacts, websites, images and information from the game: The Darkest Puzzle.
This exhibition comprises the practical component of Hugh Davies’ PhD research.
Congratulations to PhD candidate Hugh Davies on the success of his exhibition The Darkest Puzzle at MADA Gallery.
