'There are two problems in painting,' a young Frank Stella once told an audience of art students. 'One is to find out what painting is, and the other is to find out how to make a painting. It could be said that if one could come to a clear sense of what it is, it would already supply or at least imply the answer – one might even say, the formula for how to make it.'
