My design is about the provision of long term temporary housing for people who experience a housing crisis. It considers people who may have experienced the loss of their home during a natural disaster and new immigrants or students who need temporary shelter for the beginning of a new life. Such places are more complex than mere shelter. My design explores how the connecting spaces between private dwelling units and shared pubic interior space, can contribute to community vitality and create a sense of neighborhood. How can the interior architecture encourage people to occupy this connective secondary space to create neighbourhood activities and motivate social interaction? This secondary space made from thresholds, corridors and stairwells are reconceptualised as horizontal and vertical laneways in order to create a strong, social community place.
