When visiting Port Hedland in Australia’s remote North West desert, one would be greeted with “who do you work for?” as it is assumed that you would have no purpose at Australia’s largest bulk export port aside from cashing in on iron ore mining. Generating a greater emphasis on tourism and recreation is therefore needed to alleviate the melancholic work-rest lifestyle and inspire a multi-dimensional community. In order to encourage the passing visitors to stay, Port Hedland’s unique attractions need to be accessible and the climate more comfortable.

The inlet is Port Hedland’s most defining feature though it is not yet utilised for recreation nor as nature’s air-conditioner. My proposal therefore, combines much needed accommodation for tourists and temporary residents alike with an abundance of shade, infrastructure to connect water with recreation and cyclone protection, as a catalyst for a positive social perception of Port Hedland, both locally and nationally.
