Venue: Mechanics Institute, 270 Sydney Rd, Brunswick

Myth and ritual is combined with the mind-control techniques to push the audience above and beyond their limits. It is at times terrifying and also terrifically funny. This transformative show turns mice into men, girls into Amazonian warriors, all wrapped up in a post-apocalyptic 1980s Mad Max style escapade. This shows is a heady cocktail of cognitive behaviour therapy, Jungian psychoanalysis and transcendental existentialism with a dash of Zen!

Set in a post-apocalyptic future the audience is divided into groups who are taken on a number of rituals to explore different aspects of courage and heroism. Each ritual is designed to humorously challenge their limits and reveal each individual’s heroic potential. The audience is moved from the theatre to the streets to face their demons then returning as one they are initiated into the tribe.

Writer and director Cameron Rose explains, “Humans are by their very nature tribal creatures but this can lead to conformity and mediocrity. I want to harness our innate desire to form groups and use it to empower and embolden people during what may seem confusing times. We always wonder how we would act in a crisis, we manifest that crisis theatrically and comically.”

Heroes: Beyond the Practice is the third in a series of productions that have explored these themes. The Practice and The Practice 2.0 were sell out shows in 2015 and 2016. It is supported by Moreland City Council Microgrant and curated by Next Wave.

Produced by Mari-Claire Lewis. Music by Giosuè Prochilo.
